Gettin' Grimey With Silkie

The UK artist Martin Clark of Blackdown and Dusk + Blackdown, is a respected force in the dark grimey world of the bass enduced genre better known as, "Dubstep". When he's not throwin down heavy fiyah he writes the "Grime/Dubstep" column for Pitchfork. His latest article features the amazing West London's dubstepper Silkie's debut album City Limits Vol.1 and the fertile ground between grime MCs and funky tracks right now. City Limits Vol.1 due to be released on Mala DMZ's Deep Medi label.

"When I was younger I never went anywhere," explains Silkie. "I had one holiday-- when I was 13-- up until when I first played abroad, in 2007. That was eight years of not even leaving London. You can really be trapped in London if you don't get out. Because it's so big, you can really feel like London is the world. It makes you feel like that."

"Three years after dubstep blew up, you could argue many of the things that made it special have disappeared. Yet despite the gloom, dubstep has begun to find glimmers of hope, whether it's the unstable synth experimentalism of wonky, the swing of Sully, Skream's glass ceiling-busting La Roux remix, the innovation of the Hyperdub camp, the halfstep of Kryptic Minds, the mood of Perverelist, or LD and Cluekid's jungle-inspired rollage. Yet one light has provided more source of hope than pretty much anyone else: west London's Silkie and his Anti Social Entertainment camp."

Remember That Text You Shouldn't Of Sent Last Night

A friend of mine told me to check out Texts From Last Night, a serious timewaster. You know those racy late-night texts that you receive late at night that are more than likely sent by your drunk and soon to be embarrassed love interest? Well now you can share them with the whole internet. Instead of just forwarding them to your friends, you can send them to the anonymous blogsite textsfromlastnight.com for all the world to read.
It's hilarious reading the absurd messages that people all over the world send in drunken stupers. TFLN features text messages which you can send in to the site. To do this...Send texts via email with the area code of the sender as the subject: text@textsfromlastnight.com. The site also showcases "Best Nights" and "Worse Nights". Read the debauchery that takes place on TFLN for a good laugh...

"Texts From Last Night (TFLN) was founded in February 2009 by two friends for reasons that may or may not include: the tendency to press send more easily as the night turns to morning, friends social habits, Kwame Kilpatrick, exes, law school, closing down bars and leaving tabs open, general debauchery and/or a common disgust for all the negativity surrounding the "sexting" phenomenon.

We prefer texts, not conversations. We reserve the right to take portions of conversations to post without posting the entire thing. It's not because the entire thing isn't funny, but the funniest texts are those we can all relate to, so without the context of the conversation they really become funny.

Our goal is to create a site that was revealing in nature while concealing the identity of everyone involved. This is why we only ask for an area code to accompany your text messages.

We don't want any texts that are offensive to the point of being viciously personal, racist, exceedingly profane, violent or "too" graphic in nature. It's a very hard thing to judge, but we'll do our best.

For more, check out our Terms of Service for full details of our legal policy. If you don't feel like it, just know that TFLN, our advertisers and anyone who promotes with us is doing so purely for entertainment purposes. In other words, we're not your parents, your employer or your probation officer. In fact, they probably sent their texts in too.

Welcome to TFLN. Enjoy your infamy.

RiP: A Remix Manifesto

In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers.

The films central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil's Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride.

A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP: A remix manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent alarm and draw the lines of battle.

Which side of the ideas war are you on?
