We Need Vodka In Space

Tiny red light-emitting diodes infuse potato plants with life even in the unnatural environment of a space station — fueling our brave hope that one day, astronauts will be able to make their own vodka. Food in space has come a long way, as a new space-food retrospective proves.
Gourmet Magazine has a fantastic look at the state of space food today, as well as a look back at space cuisine's humblest beginnings. Starting with the stereotypical tinfoil-wrapped meal simulators (TM) and individually shrink-wrapped portions of freeze-dried pot roast, you can see the progression through the "meat salad" of the 1970s (don't ask) up to vegetables grown in special hydroponic chambers, using LEDs.
Turns out LEDs don't just make your skin as smooth as Luther Vandross' voice — they also make potatoes grow like gangbusters. And apparently you can increase crop yields to crazy levels, using high-intensity lighting, hydroponic cultures and optimal CO2 levels. (But how long before these super-plants turn sentient and want to eat us?) Also, apparently tomatoes grown in microgravity get freakishly large and have no seeds. Freakish! Read more

I'm F***ing Seth Rogan
I know this is old but I loved Zack and Miri Make A Porno...
Straight from the set of Kevin Smith's Zack And Miri Make A Porno - starring Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Jason Mewes, Traci Lords, Craig Robinson, Jeff Anderson, Katie Morgan and Ricky Mabe - comes a decidedly NSFW cautionary tale about just what it takes to get ahead in Hollywood...

Fire It Up

Boulder, Colorado’s Big Gigantic have been killing the live electronic music scene as of late. In the past few months, Big Gigantic went from playing a few club gigs around Colorado to opening for STS9, playing upcoming shows with Shpongle and Bassnectar, headlining shows through the South East and hitting summer festivals throughout the country.
Big Gigantic is the Latest project from Dominic Lalli (Motet saxophonist/producer) and drummer Jeremy Salken. The two-man sound-machine of Lalli and Salken showcases an array of gripping composition combining elements of a DJ and a live band setup, mixing thoughtful melodic ideas, with pulsating dance tunes. Big Gigantic flavors the electronic music scene with powerful sax solos and soulful synth lines on top of super hot beats.
Fire It Up, the debut album from Big Gigantic, combines hard-hitting dance beats and booming bass lines with lush electronic landscapes and unforgettable melodies. This 10-track gem dropped May 19th on 1320 Records for free download...or get it zipped up here Read more
1996 Throw Back: My Boo
Ghost Town DJs essentially existed in the vacuous, anonymous realm their name seems to suggest until they stumbled upon a way to make the world take notice. Instead of churning out more of their bass-heavy, jiggling, Miami-inspired music, or reaching further back in time to glorify early hip-hop with “Planet Rock”-inspired retro-future gazing, they opted for a new formula: pair off throbbing bass with antique beats and R&B vocals. It worked, and “My Boo” (1996) became a single that was as catchy as the common cold. Their specialty, however, remains catering to those with big woofers and an insatiable appetite for bass.

Get Up Now

"If all West Coast dubstep was this stony we wouldn't be having the medical weed debate. The project of two dudes with the best producer names ever (ROOMMATE and NO THING!), Babylon System's new record is called Hyphy which is both wonderfully cheeky but also totally accurate, like this dubby free wheeling joint is a new type of thizzface." via The Fader

I'll Get You
"I'll get You" Classixx feat. Jeppe/ Kitsuné x The Cobrasnake EP from Maison Kitsuné on Vimeo.
"In late 2003, we were at a little party on the east side of Los Angeles. It was at a Vice store. We were drinking this crazy stuff called Sparks. There was mayyyyybe one fixed gear bicycle parked outside but it may have been a rusty ten speed with a forgotten lock combo. The memories are cloudy. Anyway, it was mellow. This dude wearing $4 glaucoma sunglasses and a headband walked up and asked to take a picture with his Polaroid. He seemed weird but generally pretty nice. He is now absurdly wealthy (we're assuming), uses a big digital camera and none of that other stuff really exists anymore. Life, man. Anyway, Mark the Cobrasnake, formerly Polaroid Scene, recently "directed" a "video" for LA band Classixx and it looks like things are still going well for him. And California—good shit." via The Fader Read more

Jay-Z Leaves Def Jam

"Said Jay-Z on 2001's "U Don't Know": "I'm raping Def Jam 'til I'm the hundred million man." He underestimated!
Last year, Jay-Z signed a $150 million 360 deal with Live Nation, the company that seemed determined to overspend on deals with every remaining music superstar on the planet (well, before the recession, anyway). When Jay signed that deal, he still owed an album to his old label, Def Jam. But as Rap Radar reported and MTV confirmed today, Jay-Z is now officially off Def Jam, even though that final album never materialized.
Yesterday, Hits Daily Double reported that Jay had bought himself out of his Def Jam deal for $5 million. Pocket change for Jay-Z.
In a statement to Rap Radar, Jay had this to say:
"I can honestly say, working with [Universal Music Group Chairman/CEO] Doug Morris and [Island/Def Jam Music Group Chairman] L.A. Reid has been a unique and fulfilling experience and I respect them immensely. I've been in the family for almost my entire career.
"Doug and I spoke directly and had one of the most unique 'negotiations' ever. Doug won the toss but we both won in the end.
"I thank him for allowing me to be a completely independent artist. Not every artist can say they own or are given the opportunity to own all of their music."
Now maybe Jay's new Live Nation bosses can convince him to hurry up and finish The Blueprint 3." via Pitchfork Read more

Phonesex The Book, is a collection of new photographs by Phil Toledano. The result is a glimpse into the reality of a world that is otherwise suffused with fantasy; it's engaging and sometimes disturbing, comical and moving.
We'll talk to Phil, as well as some of the phone sex workers he took pictures of, and learn about the lives of phone sex workers through these very telling photos.

Solar Powered Headphones
Yeah I said it, Solar Powered Headphones...it's crazy to think about how much technology has been progressing forward in a world that is constantly changing, but this is something that I thought was "cool"...

When it comes to wearable devices that harness the power of the sun, it would seem to make sense that the obvious place for solar panels would be the place that generally gets the most sunlight – namely the top of the head. That might not be desirable for items such as backpacks, jackets or sunglasses, but it’s such a perfect fit for headphones that you wonder why no one has thought of it before. Engineering student Shepeleff Stephen has hit on the obvious with his concept for Bluetooth-enabled headphones that incorporate solar panels into the headband. via Gizmag
