Callahan drops Ovechkin, Then Saves Goal

The New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals began the NHL Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series last night. The Rangers icemen skated into the Capitals rink, with one thing on their mind; to be VICTORY. Setting the mark they ended up defeating Washington 4-3 on the road stealing home-ice advantage from the Capitals.

The odds were not in their favor either, playing without their praised captain, Chris Drury due to injury. Thanks to their superior defense and goalie Henrik Lundqvist who had 32-35 in saves. The Rangers netminder also held scoring sensation Alex Ovechkin 0-13 on shots. New York center,Scott Gomez stepped up tremendously, scoring one goal and having two assists.

The Rangers scored two power play goals in a span of 99 seconds late in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. The Capitals fought back leaving the game tied late in the third period.

Rochester, NY native Ryan Callahan had a team high 7 hits, two shots hit the post, and made a huge empty net shot block in the last seconds of the game. He also knocked superstar, Ovechkin down, causing him to skate off the ice with 5 seconds left in the powerplay. This set up Brandon Dubinski who shook Jeff Shultz out of his pampers and then sniped Capital goalie Theodore for the game winner with 8:17 to go in the third period. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday (1 p.m. ET, NBC, TSN) and there are rumors of Drury to return to play.
