The Ambassador of Funk

Known as Los Angeles' "Ambassador of Boogie Funk," DâM-FunK represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Culver City section of L.A., dãm (pronounced: 'Dame' as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-'80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk.
As a DJ/selector, dãm attracts the most discerning Boogie Funk afficionados within driving distance of his storied Monday-night Funkmosphere parties. But it's not just collectors at the bar toasting to the melodic sounds. Anyone who grooves to the likes of Slave, Aurra, early Prince, Prelude Records and the like, will get a dose of those groups' unknown contemporaries – more obscure but equally Funk-worthy.
The next phase of the Ambassador's mission: continuing the classic West Coast tradition into today's scene with dãm's own original "Modern-Funk" compositions. By plugging in his arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines, dãm channels the galactic harmonies of his inspiration into his own brand of new boogie. Stones Throw Records' like-minded honcho Peanut Butter Wolf brought dãm on to the team to glide into the future with his unique, synth and bass-driven vibe. It's a promising new chapter for Southern Cali space funk.
Here is a mix from Mary Anne Hobbs Experimental Show on BBC1...

Major Lazer: "Hold The Line"
"This is taking us back to Saturday morning cartoons something fierce. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was our fave, but we also were into Jem and the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon (yes we are that cool). Also remember when the New Kids on the Block had their own cartoon, chronicling their wacky antics? We think it would be funny if Diplo and Switch had their own cartoon about their lives, it would be lots of tweeting, drinking, smoking and taking their shirts off. In Jamaica," said The Fader Read more

Underground Phish Concert Recording

Recently Phish reunited for the first time in 5 years by playing three concerts at Hampton Coliseum, or “The Mothership,” as phans refer to it. Shortly after the three sold-out shows in March, many grassroots, homemade, videos of the concerts started to appear on YouTube.
These videos, shot by unknown Phish fans, were released on the web for the world to see and download. Shot in entirely High-Definition, this is an impressive accomplishment, bringing Phish’s live show to your PC. As impressive as this might be it still violates Phish’s recording policy. Phish has always allowed fans to freely record and distribute audio recordings from their concerts. Video is not allowed under the bands Taping Policy.

F**k Work I Don't Have A Job
Coming STRAIGHT ATCHA from The Fader is a video premiere: Cubic Zirconia "Funk Work" + Dam-Funk Remix
The Fader had this to say, "As far as supergroups go, we're not really that about it (megalomaniacs rarely work well together), but we've been itching to hear Cubic Zirconia's new stuff for months. The power quartet that is vocalist Tiombe Lockhart, Nick Hook (of Drop the Lime band), Todd Weinstock (ex-Glassjaw!) and Daud Sturdivant (empath, every band needs one) granted our wishes over the weekend while we were BBQing by dropping this little video heatrock on us. To amp the awesome, they also offered a stream of "Fuck Work"'s killer Dam-Funk remix, coming from their EP out June 22. We sense a summer mantra..."

Calm Cool and Collected

O-BAMA, our President was G'd up from the feet up even as a freshmen...
"He's like the perfect combination of confidence without arrogance, intelligence without pretentiousness, and straight-up cool in the true sense of the word.
By the looks of these images by photographer Lisa Jack, taken way back in the day when Mr Obama was a freshman at Occidental College, it's always been the case too. Sporting and completely owning a wide-brimmed Panama and puffing away on a fag, the dude was seriously untouchable.
Today marks the opening of an exhibition showcasing 21 of the 36 photos taken from this series at West Hollywood's M+B Gallery. The images will be on display until 18th July. If like me, you live a bazillion miles away from West Hollywood and can't make it, check some samples from the series to the right of this post. So much swagger." via Life Lounge

1986 Throwback

It's Thursday folks and that only means one thing...THE WEEKEND STARTS TOMORROW! So don't worry and be happy, and this tune will get you well on your way to three day break or a whirlwind.
Here is Bobby McFerrin's one hit wonder "Don't Worry Be Happy". The single was released in 1986 and the album, Don't Worry Be Happy was debuted in 1988.
In September of, this track became the first a cappella song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and held that position for two weeks. On the UK Singles Chart, the song reached number 2 during its fifth week on the chart. At the 1989 Grammy Awards, "Don't Worry Be Happy" won the awards for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. The song's title is taken from a famous quote by Meher Baba. The original music video stars Robin Williams and Bill Irwin. The "instrumentals" in the a cappella song are entirely overdubbed voice parts and other sounds made by McFerrin, using no instruments at all. ENJOY

Big and Bashy

Via The Fader comes this exclusive mix by Dutty Artz co-founder Matt Shadetek titled "Dutty Artz Blend".
"It is nuyorcentric, psychotropical and heavily dosed with the voice and production of Gize "77Klash" Burrowes, who has often had his name invoked in Ghetto Palms but has been underrepresented sonically. It arrived in my inbox with this note: File under BK bashment, sub-soca, dutty house, roots and future, waking up the neighbors. Go crazy." (Matt’s comments follow the track-listing after the jump)
Matt Shadetek - Dutty Artz Blend Matt Shadetek’s Dutty Artz Blend:
1. Dotstar, "Stick Up" (Dutty Artz Dub)
2. Father Bookie, "Mi Name" (Matt Shadetek Tropical Rmx)
3. Kingdom, "Fogs"
4. Noble Society, "The Swarm"
5. 77Klash feat. Matt Shadetek, "Pressure"
6. Jahdan Blakkamoore, "Go Round Payola" (Matt Shadetek Bye Haters Rmx)
7. Marcus Visionary, "Big and Bashy"
8. Matt Shadetek, "Battery Charge"
9. Matt Shadetek, "Pure Riddim"
10. Jahdan Blakkamoore, "The General"
11. Beniton The Menace, "Recession"
"Stick Up Dub": This kid is busting up the LDN Funky scene right now with this tune. Geko (Jones) reached out and he cut this dub for us, love it.
"Mi Name" (Tropical Rmx): This one is brand new and exclusive to this mix. I took the acapella from Father Bookie's tune on 77Klash's Swarm Riddim and laid it over this new dutty house riddim of mine. Add autotune and: boom!
“Fogs”: Brand new instrumental from Kingdom, exclusive and unreleased. This guy is one of my favorite new producers in NYC.
"The Swarm": Big bad BK bashment from Jahdan and the Noble fam over 77Klash's Swarm Riddim. Love this one.
“Pressure”: New tune produced by me with Klash on vox in shouting mode. Moshpit dancehall.
“Go Round Payola” (Shadetek Remix): This is a quick remix I did of a tune that I produced for Jahdan's We Are Raiders
“Big and Bashy”: MADNESS from Toronto's Visionary, also unreleased as far as I know. He's been doing these really crazy 4x4 140 bpm tunes with a heavy rave vibe, we've been calling it sub-soca over here.
“Battery Charge”: New dutty/grime house from me, made this one while teaching logic at dubspot.
“Pure Riddim”: This one is on Jahdan's We Are Raiders EP as an instrumental and a vocal version on his forthcoming album Buzzrock Warrior.
“The General”: Produced by me and Liondub this is from Buzzrock Warrior as well, out on 12-inch now.
“Recession”: Found out about this guy through Skerrit Bwoy playing his specials. Killer new New York artist. Read more
In The Mix With Sticky K

Another debut on Switch's Dubsided label coming from newly signed California producer Sticky K's cracking Bandari Funk EP drops. It's been a while since the last Dubsided release, but Sticky K's 3 tracker is certainly worth it and you can grab it on iTunes.
Starting off the EP with the rinsing fidget and Ludacris sampling sounds of the geniusly named "The Testament Of Doctor Mabuse". We move on to the even heavier monster synth assault title track itself, coming on like The Bloody Beetroots fighting in a pub car park with Fake Blood, this is definately not for the faint of heart! Final track "Alphaville" is an ultra-anthemic and ultra-euphoric banger which reminds a little of the previous Nadastrom release on Dubsided. Big things here.

Backstage Pass With Deadmau5
Deadmau5 is conquering the dance stratosphere one cheese board at a time.
Last month he took over the normally indie associated Electric Ballroom in Camden where he filled the 700 odd capacity venue on a Wednesday night. Mixmag was there, as were this film crew who captured the night for those who couldn't make the school night special. Deadmau5 also explains how he got his name and the significance of the spelling. via Mix Mag

80s Italo-Boogie Throwback

German producer and legendary DJ Friction graces us with this on point selection of tracks from the italo-side of early 80s boogie. In terms of its lifespan, Italo Disco somewhat quickly morphed into the High NRG cheese sound, but in its first several years it seemed to take more influence from American R&B than synthy Euro-Pop. I like to call this early incarnation (roughly 1980-1982), Italo Boogie. The ubiquitous studio group Kano (which is credited for first ushering in the italo sound) had its finest moment in 1981 with "Don't Try To Stop Me" from their second LP entitled New York Cake. Boeing dropped only one 12" in their very short career, 1982's "Dance on the Beat". Both tracks are strong examples of Italo Boogie steeped in the disco-funk sounds coming from across the Atlantic with a little added euro flavor.

Electronic Popstar Killers

I was completely blown away by Loo & Placido's new party mix Electronic Popstar Killers. Finding myself god damn speechless I had to take a moment to get my shit together before writing about this one...
Put yo mutha f***ing hands up for the Loo & Plaido mix featuring two hours and 42 exclusive mash-ups, remixes, edits and covers utterly smashing today's hottest Electro, Rave, Fidget and Ghetto Bangers with some of the greatest Rock, Hip-Hop, Disco and Punk hits (all done by themselves) ever, EVERRRRRR !
This masked duo hails from Paris, France and have been dj’ing and mashing up tracks since 1999. I know mash-ups are under media scrutency but they blow the competition away with this mix. Yeah I know, it's two hours and your thinking thats about an hour and a half too long for me and I don't have time for this bs (believe me I was on the same page). But when I listened to it, that time flew by and had me raising the volume bit by bit and pumping it all the time since it’s so f***ing good. And what really makes me glad with this mix, is that it contains so many freaking unexpected tracks that I wouldn’t dream of hearing in any kind of similar mixtapes.

Beastie Boys Get It In with The Roots
One of my favortie groups of alltime the, Beastie Boys, have been all over the place lately. In addition to headlining all the festivals, the guys are systematically re-releasing their discography this year, while also promising a new LP awesomely titled Hot Sauce Committee. Instead of the new, the Beasties used their Fallon appearance to plug their recent Check Your Head reissue by doing "So What'cha Want" with the The Roots at their back on Late NightJimmy Fallon May 25, 2009.
It's a logical choice as the album's signature song, but also offers a surreptitious tease to the future when MCA's all "cool as a cucumber in a bowl of hot sauce." The Beastie Boys continue their catalog-reissue parade with an Ill Communication release on July 14th (preorders start July 6 on beastieboys.com). For new sounds, stay tuned for the Hot Sauce Committee LP this September, or try "Lee Majors Come Again" right now.

Movin' to the Groove in Detroit

Connecting the world through the power of dance, music lovers gather in Detroit's Hart Plaza on the Detroit River for their annual Dance & Electronic Music Festival(DEMF). Presenting the definitive global experience of dance and electronic music, art, technology and culture in the famed birth place of techno music DETROIT CITY(many argue that). DEMF generated one million in attendance and $94 million dollars in direct economic impact for its host city annually during its first three years of exceptional production. In hard economic times you can not appreciate that. Sorry to say that the Movement 2009 went down last weekend...via JoeyVision at Current.

Speaker Humpin'

Last year was a big year for Subvert releasing on Muti Music, Punch Drunk and Rottun Recordings. His Dirt Nap EP rocked the Addictech and Beatport "Grime/Dubstep" charts and lead to him being featured in XLR8R magazine and radio play on multiple urban music shows.
This year appears to be an even hotter one for Subvert with a US & Canada tour and major festival bookings and this all new 4 track EP, Speaker Humpin', that will rattle a building off it’s foundations if given half the chance.
Tracklist:
1.Speaker Humpin
2.Unknown Virus
3.Dance Revolution
4.Inferno

Subvert hails from Calgary, Alberta and his winding path in music started in 1996. Proof of his dedication to ‘bass’ is in his track record of creating the world’s loudest competition vehicles, designing pK’s 90,000 watt sound system and managing the Village Stage at Shambhala Music Festival. He started DJing in 2000 and combined with his extensive work on sound systems and attention to precision sound, he was ultimately & naturally led down the path to creating his own music productions and once again the low frequencies consumed him. Subvert’s sound is a combination of throbbing, relentless basslines, melodic strings and haunting pianos singing through midtempo glitch/acid crunk and dubstep. His attention to detail and the ability to tune into ‘bass that works on a sound-system’ can be felt in all of his music productions, he is an expert in the subsonic, the crowd and the show.
